Johns Manville (JM), a Berkshire Hathaway company and leading building products manufacturer, was recently recognized for Excellence in Community Service by The Communitas Awards for the company’s first Global Community Day last fall that helped local charities and promoted employee volunteerism.
The company’s second annual Global Community Day happened this week.
The Communitas Awards is an international effort to recognize exceptional businesses, organizations and individuals that are unselfishly giving of themselves and their resources, and those that are changing how they do business to benefit their communities. Communitas is a Latin word that means “people coming together for the good of a community.”
“Global Community Day demonstrates the passion our employees have for volunteering and community service,” said Mary Rhinehart, JM’s President and CEO. “The volunteer projects bring teams of employees together in rewarding ways and give us a chance to deliver positive and powerful JM Experiences to those around us.”
Global Community Day was organized last year as part of Johns Manville’s employee-driven Corporate Social Responsibility program. JM employees have demonstrated their desire to support their communities by participating in company-sponsored community outreach activities on an increasingly frequent basis. The company tracks volunteer statistics and has seen a 69 percent increase in the number of volunteers and a 78 percent increase in the number of volunteer hours since 2014. In 2018 alone, JM logged over 15,000 volunteer hours by over 5,500 volunteers who helped with nearly 300 community outreach projects.
More than 2,000 employees worldwide participated in 50 local events and activities during Global Community Day last October.
In the Denver area, where Johns Manville is headquartered, employees worked at local homeless shelters; served lunch at the Ronald McDonald House; volunteered at the Denver Botanical Gardens and the Seniors’ Resource Center; sent care packages to the troops overseas; participated in a Habitat for Humanity build; and volunteered with other organizations.
At plant locations around the world, employees hosted a charity kickball tournament; volunteered at animal shelters; adopted streets and picked up trash; conducted food and clothing drives; delivered Meals on Wheels; collected new and fun bed sheets for pediatric oncology patients; provided landscaping services; and participated in other volunteer activities.
Many of the same types of activities are happening this month in cities throughout the U.S., Canada, Germany and Slovakia as part of the second annual Global Community Day.
