A Study on Unit-Price Procurement

According to the latest study released by the International Institute of Building Enclosure Constants (IIBEC), “The desire to develop faster and simpler procurement processes for construction projects has resulted in unit pricing procurement systems that do not always protect the public investment or yield the most appropriate project solutions.”

The white paper on this study, An Analysis of Unit-Price Procurement, sheds light on when financial interests weigh in on the three primary categories of qualifications, design development, and construction unit price procurement, all of which can lead to wasted taxpayer dollars and safety concerns. School districts, municipalities, and universities tend to adopt this approach. Issues arise when products are specified based on financial gain; therefore, having an organization such as IIBEC, where members have no financial gain in product selection, ensures the best interest is in the building enclosure, not the wallet.

Johns Manville supports IIBEC, as this will only better our industry.
