Thermal Shift Webinar

Thermal Shift is a fairly new concept in the industrial insulation industry, and it is an issue that singularly affects the performance of silica aerogel insulations.  Thermal shift refers to the degradation of an insulation’s thermal performance as a result of exposure to high temperatures, and while it may seem like a fairly straight forward concept, it can actually have a number of negative consequences that unfavorably impact the entire system:

1. Unexpected increase to surface temperatures risking safe-to-touch safety standards
2. Inconsistent process control temperatures
3. Permanent decrease in the insulation’s thermal performance
4. Increased energy consumption and operating costs
5. A rise in CO2 emissions

Given that operating temperatures can and do fluctuate throughout the lifecycle of any insulation system, it is critical for designers to understand and anticipate how temperature influences Thermal Shift, as well as the extent to which Thermal Shift will impact the performance of the insulation.  Additionally, designers need to understand the role that the pipe system configuration (flat pipes vs. round pipes) plays in the overall outcome of Thermal Shift.
