Those in the know in roofing know TPO. So, too, does Johns Manville’s Kaare Kurtzke, who recently sat down with Heidi J. Ellsworth for a Roofers Coffee Shop Lunch and Learn session titled “TPO Roofing 101.”
In the video, Kurtzke, TPO product manager for JM, talks about TPO’s rapid rise to dominate market share from small numbers in the early 2000s to upwards of 50% of the low-slope roofing market today. Why? Durability, energy efficiency and ease of installation, Kurtzke said.
Among the specifics he highlighted in his 30-or-so-minute chat with Ellsworth is TPO’s heat weldability, which allows for strong seams that play a key role in a roof’s longevity.
TPO also is known for its reflectivity, Kurtzke said.
The white membrane reflects a lot of heat away vs. its black membrane counterparts, and, in turn, is more energy efficient making it an ideal option for large commercial buildings in sunny locations such as Florida, California, and Texas, he said.
And though it’s been around for more than four decades, TPO keeps evolving, with innovations further fueling its popularity as a cost-effective roofing solution, according to Kurtzke.
